Orchard Coffee House Volunteer

Purpose of the role: Our volunteers play a key role in the mission of the Orchard Coffee House to reach people in our community for Jesus. You will provide a warm and friendly welcome and will support the Catering Team staff in guiding, assisting and serving customers, but more importantly showing compassion to the people of our community, signposting people to pastoral care and support where appropriate and being ever attentive to Spirit-given opportunities to witness to the saving grace of Christ.

Hours: The main opening hours of the Coffee House are planned to eventually become Monday – Friday 10am – 5pm and Saturday 9:30am – 4pm but there may be special events at other times. We’d hope volunteers would typically serve for four hours at a time but this can be adapted to suit your needs and availability.

Contract length: Volunteers aren’t subject to contract but if you agree to a regular pattern of shifts then we will also ask you to provide us with as much notice as possible if you wish to withdraw from service, to help us ensure that the Coffee House is still adequately staffed.

Principal duties and responsibilities:

  • Help to ensure that the Orchard Coffee House is all set to go, and bring the mission of the Orchard Coffee House before the Lord in prayer, prior to commencing work and at other opportunities as appropriate.
  • Offer a warm and friendly welcome to all our customers, maintaining the ethos of the Orchard Coffee House as a place of community, compassion and a constant witness to the love of God in Christ Jesus.
  • Assist the staff to prepare and serve food and drink as needed, helping to clean and clear tables and assisting kitchen staff with preparing food and clearing up as required.
  • Respond to opportunities to speak to people in a way that shows care and compassion, responding to moves of the Spirit to be a witness for Christ in the Orchard Coffee House.
  • Recognise where pastoral needs are apparent and offer support or involve other volunteers and staff members as appropriate.

Person specification:

It is essential that volunteers have:

  • A passion for Jesus and a desire to see people won for the Kingdom
  • Great communication skills to relate warmly to all people
  • An ability to work as an effective member of a team and to promote teamwork at all times
  • Compassion for people’s needs and a love for the community
  • A willingness to signpost people who wish to talk about faith or pastoral matters

Previous experience in a hospitality role would obviously be useful but is absolutely not required as we will make sure you have all the training that you need… but a positive ‘can do’ mindset, a heart for the Kingdom and a desire to help us to deliver great customer service is essential!

This is primarily a ministry role. As such there is a requirement that volunteers for this role are committed and practising Christians.
